There’s an old saying – “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” According to the WHO – it may make Jack more than dull. From Newser:
Working Too Many Hours Is Killing 745K a Year
‘Working 55 hours or more per week is a serious health hazard,’ researchers say
(Newser) – Working too many hours in a week is a massive health hazard that kills an estimated 745,000 people worldwide—and the problem is getting worse, according to a new World Health Organization study. The WHO says that compared to a standard working week of 35 to 40 hours, working 55 hours or more in a week is associated with a 35% higher risk of having a stroke and a 17% higher risk of dying from heart disease, the BBC reports. More than 70% of the deaths associated with long working hours were in men middle-aged and older, though researchers say the deaths often occurred later in life than the period of overwork.
“Working 55 hours or more per week is a serious health hazard,” said Maria Neira, director of the WHO’s Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health, per Reuters. “What we want to do with this information is promote more action, more protection of workers.” The problem is most severe in Southeast Asia and the western Pacific region, researchers say. The study found that long hours can be deadly both from the body’s direct reaction to stress and the unhealthy lifestyles, including tobacco use, unhealthy diets, and a lack of sleep and exercise, that people working too many hours tend to adopt. The study did not include data from the pandemic, though WHO officials say evidence suggests the number of hours worked tends to increase around 10% during lockdowns. (Read more overwork stories.)

I worked in a meat packing plant in the 70’s to 2010, before the big strike in the 80’s, the most we could work was 60 hr week, after the strike, some of the guys were working 70 and 80 hours a week. I tried a 65 hr and 68 hr week and my wife almost threw me out of the house because I was so hard to live with. After that, no more long weeks, we made do with the income we had.
I typically work 60+ hours a week. Been doin it for over 3 decades. I. LOVE. IT.
What makes WHO believable?
All depends on your sex, genetics, diet, how stress is handled and healthy exercise.
IF working 55 or more hours a week in this country, all women would die young, but somehow they outlive men who don’t.
“Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.”

The whole conspiracy would have unraveled, at Eden, if we had just stuck to sexist, men’s rights activist kind-of points.
No one on their deathbed ever said, ‘I wish I’d spent more time at work’.
Textbooks, called primers, taught at advanced levels, compared to presentday standards.
You used to be able to start a family by highschool age — in exchange for your labor. It was considered a “real” job.
A man could become rich, through enough extra labor, in a fair, industrialized society.
“They” are writing a new social bargain, as there is no more right to work, following so much social decay.
Work used to be considered producing something useable from the earth’s abundant natural resources…not sitting at a modem watching the algorithms skim trillions off other’s “investments”. Surplus products were sold at a profit and you felt tired but satisfied at the end of your workday.
Now, the easy to mine resources are gone and it takes more and more energy to get them out and to market. This leaves less left to produce tangible goods at a profit. Capex is squeezed and jobs are offshored and cut. Soon everyone wants to wash each other’s cars and cut each other’s hair and no real goods are produced in country. Service jobs are all that remain. Most goods are imported because it is cheaper that way and everyone wants “cheap”.
A Mad Max collapse is coming. Fire up the sand rail and condition them assless chaps. The Ayatollah of rock ‘n’ rollah is headed this way.
