Government officials have been closely monitoring the activity in the Yellowstone caldera.  However, scientists at NASA have now come up with an incredibly risky plan to save the United States from the super volcano.

A NASA scientist has spoken out about the true threat of super volcanoes and the risky methods that could be used to prevent a devastating eruption. Lying beneath the tranquil and beautiful settings of Yellowstone National Park in the US lies an enormous magma chamber, called a caldera. It’s responsible for the geysers and hot springs that define the area, but for scientists at NASA, it’s also one of the greatest natural threats to human civilization as we know it.

Brian Wilcox, a former member of the NASA Advisory Council on Planetary Defense, shared a report on the natural hazard that hadn’t been seen outside of the agency until now. Following an article published by BBC about super volcanoes last month, a group of NASA researchers got in touch with the media to share a report previously unseen outside the space agency about the threat Yellowstone poses, and what they hypothesize could possibly be done about it.

“I was a member of the NASA Advisory Council on Planetary Defense which studied ways for NASA to defend the planet from asteroids and comets,” explains Brian Wilcox of Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) at the California Institute of Technology. “I came to the conclusion during that study that the supervolcano threat is substantially greater than the asteroid or comet threat.”

Yellowstone currently leaks about 60 to 70 percent of its heat into the atmosphere through stream water which seeps into the magma chamber through cracks, while the rest of the heat builds up as magma and dissolves into volatile gasses. The heat and pressure will reach the threshold, meaning an explosion is inevitable. When NASA scientists considered the fact that a super volcano’s eruption would plunge the earth into a volcanic winter, destroying most sources of food, starvation would then become a real possibility.  Food reserves would only last about 74 days, according to the UN, after an eruption of a super volcano, like that under Yellowstone.  And they have devised a risky plan that could end up blowing up in their faces.  Literally.

Wilcox hypothesized that if enough heat was removed, and the temperature of the super volcano dropped, it would never erupt. But he wants to see a 35% decrease in temperature, and how to achieve that, is incredibly risky. One possibility is to simply increase the amount of water in the supervolcano. As it turns to steam. the water would release the heat into the atmosphere, making global warming alarmists tremble.

“Building a big aqueduct uphill into a mountainous region would be both costly and difficult, and people don’t want their water spent that way,” Wilcox says. “People are desperate for water all over the world and so a major infrastructure project, where the only way the water is used is to cool down a supervolcano, would be very controversial.”

So, NASA came up with an alternative plan. They believe the most viable solution could be to drill up to 10km down into the super volcano and pump down water at high pressure. The circulating water would return at a temperature of around 350C (662F), thus slowly day by day extracting heat from the volcano. And while such a project would come at an estimated cost of around $3.46 billion, it comes with an enticing catch which could convince politicians (taxpayers) to make the investment.

“Yellowstone currently leaks around 6GW in heat,” Wilcox says. “Through drilling in this way, it could be used to create a geothermal plant, which generates electric power at extremely competitive prices of around $0.10/kWh. You would have to give the geothermal companies incentives to drill somewhat deeper and use hotter water than they usually would, but you would pay back your initial investment, and get electricity which can power the surrounding area for a period of potentially tens of thousands of years. And the long-term benefit is that you prevent a future supervolcano eruption which would devastate humanity.”

Of course, drilling into a super volcano comes with its own risks, like the eruption that scientists are desperate to prevent. Triggering an eruption by drilling would be disastrous.

“The most important thing with this is to do no harm,” Wilcox says. “If you drill into the top of the magma chamber and try and cool it from there, this would be very risky. This could make the cap over the magma chamber more brittle and prone to fracture. And you might trigger the release of harmful volatile gases in the magma at the top of the chamber which would otherwise not be released.”

The cooling of Yellowstone in this manner would also take tens of thousands of years, but it is a plan that scientists at NASA are considering for every super volcano on earth.

          • hey Eisen,

really enjoying the book “Island of the Lost”

          • Only for a minute.

        • But But,.. Wait, Joel Skousen Relocation “”EXPERT”” said Redoubt is the best place to Bug out to. Pull my finger jackass!!! Can’t wait for these idiots to eat crow.

BTW/ I biked 34 miles this AM in 2 hrs, 40 Minutes on a Mountain bike in the FL Heat. That’s an average of 12.75 Miles per hour. Mt Bikes are slower than a Street Bikes. Good workout for the legs.

Going kayaking tomorrow about 6 miles. Good workout for the upper body and arms.

When SHTF are you going to be ready and in shape to get home in a hurry, or wait for a Cab to pick you up from the donut factory lard ass?

And I conceal carry my pistol when riding and kayaking. Always be prepared. Always.

          • More like Rawles and his self declared Redoubt. I hear Michael Snyder is running for elected office in Idaho. Does that tell you anything about the Redoubt?

            • Yeah I read on Snyders website where he was E-Begging for donations. lol Lets see, Failed Lawyer turned Author, Failed Author turned Politician. Seems about right, Writing and Lying, perfect resume for politics.

Rawles was also E-Begging on his website also because he is being sued for Liable.

Liable is when you lie about someone in Print, Slander is when you lie about someone in public. And Rawles is a traitor to our country anyway because he posts a banner on his website that says “We Stand with Israehell” You know the cult parasites that are trying as hard as they can to destroy America in every facet of our society, cultures, values and Governance . Friggin gun grabbers. Shutting down free speech if you criticize them, and Rawles stands with them. Traitor. Another Phony website to boycott for ever. One second after with a boot up your ass.

              • Yea thankful I never bought any garbage Rawles put out .
These scientists can dream up these grandiose ideas on our dimes but can’t figure out the cure for cancers ! Wonder if they found a cure for white genocide yet .

              • CSS, MICHAEL SNYDER is running for a poltical office? ROTFLMFAO! Now that’s a good one!

          • What a superhero

          • What a superhero. But can you outrun bullets?

          • CSS…Pride comes before the fall. By the way, that tumor that’s growing in your chest is going to rear it’s ugly head any day now.

        • it’s not nice to screw with mother nature……….

      2. What a wonderful idea (sarc) Wait, are these not the same people that killed a bunch of astronauts with their “ideas”. Hey, lets do that on a larger scale. Wake up you clowns. This is not a giant zit that you can pop. Maybe you can “fake” this one too while you suck a few billion out of the economy.

        • @Lonewulf, agreed! Don’t mess with mother nature.

          • Iceland is one of the most volcanically active regions on the planet and has used geothermal heat to raise itself from relative poverty to one of the more prosperous western nations. It is currently investigating the possibility of even further deeper drilling to generate much more electric power:

            http://www.nea.is/geothermal/the-iceland-deep-drilling-project/

The difference between Icelanders and Americans? Unlike the “brave Americans” who bomb third world primitives, the Icelandic people are not pussies and are willing to confront the forces of nature head on.

No wonder America is going down the tube if you lot now represent the can do attitude of the USA.

            • Iceland is not / does not trying to drill into a fully loaded pressure cooker bomb that is beyond it’s pressure limits though.

        • The global warming frauds that couldn’t get Al Gores Mega billions graft scheme passed, are now begging for dollars in order to create more global warming to further reduce global ice, make stronger storms and extinct the polar bears, while trying to blow the planet up by bringing us “safe and green renewable energy” from geothermal supervolcano. Gotta give them credit though, the fraud waste and abuse schemes are never ending from government and it’s lobby groups.

Just what exactly do they think will happen when you inject into the atmosphere more super heated water vapor aside from steam fried humanity? Hello, super sized fatal sauna party anyone? Proof yet again the most dangerous psychos are still plotting our untimely painful deaths by selling us their dazzling fake snake oil.

U.S. Has 3.5 Million More Registered Voters Than Live Adults – A Red Flag For Electoral Fraud
08-19-2017 • zerohedge. com by Tyler Durden
According to a new study of U.S. Census data, America has more registered voters than actual live voters. It’s a troubling fact that puts our nation’s future in peril.

The data come from Judicial Watch’s Election Integrity Project. The group looked at data from 2011 to 2015 produced by the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, along with data from the federal Election Assistance Commission.

As reported by the National Review’s Deroy Murdock, who did some numbers-crunching of his own, “some 3.5 million more people are registered to vote in the U.S. than are alive among America’s adult citizens. Such staggering inaccuracy is an engraved invitation to voter fraud.”

Murdock counted Judicial Watch’s state-by-state tally and found that 462 U.S. counties had a registration rate exceeding 100% of all eligible voters. That’s 3.552 million people, who Murdock calls “ghost voters.” And how many people is that? There are 21 states that don’t have that many people.

Nor are these tiny, rural counties or places that don’t have the wherewithal to police their voter rolls.

California, for instance, has 11 counties with more registered voters than actual voters. Perhaps not surprisingly — it is deep-Blue State California, after all — 10 of those counties voted heavily for Hillary Clinton.

        • Menzo, just leave it to some govt. agency to screw up something.

      4. sounds like a pipe-dream to me.

        • Sounds like its on the same level as trying to stop the SanAndreas from moving,,,

          • 3.5 billion?…..maybe they should shop around a little……….

          • Drill the San Andreas and inject anal lube, San freaksico can then get the motion they been craving and commifonia will finally slide off frictionless to their watery end. Win win win

            • right on, look at the energy savings too, will not cost as much as future anal lube demands will drop. haha

      5. Humans trying to play God or best Mother Nature,,,
        What could possibly go wrong!

      6. Drilling? Seriously? Why not prick a balloon first and see what happens?

        • I liken it to trying to drill a hole in a sewage force main,,, try it some time, its fun!
Scientist are really not what they used to be are they

          • I’ve seen such an extreme degradation of quality within so many fields of science, medicine, law, and tech it’s terrifying.
My father went to one doctor: “Our surgery has a 50% chance to kill you, and a 50% chance of being bed ridden if you live” So, go get a second opinion: “Oh, that’s out patient procedure, we don’t even have to cut… you’ll have no effects.” 15 minutes after “brain surgery” he was driving home with no ill effects.
I’ve had multiple judges NOT know the law… and/or make up technicalities that do not exist… and/or their ruling was completely illegal (denying the “required by law” chance to fix typo.)
I’ve had lawyers tell me point blank “You know more about the law than I do.” And they were right.
Watch the Science channel… they non-sense dribble they peddle there is absurd… and they state it as “brilliant discovery of facts!”
When intelligence is scorned and berated… you end up with a cultural dumbing down… Watch the movie “Idiocracy” to see the long term effects.
I have an IQ of 178… and I don’t “feel smart”… but man, watching the overwhelming vast majority of people bumble around like those seen in said movie… is disheartening. I used to have respect for doctors/lawyers/judges… but I’ve seen way too many incompetent and/or downright stupid ones.
My favorite was a specialist that looks in the wrong place (against my wishes) and goes “Dunno, hope for the best.” And sends me a bill for $800 for looking up my nose. [There was nothing up my nose that could possible be causing the symptom I had in a completely unrelated area.] And says it was “outpatient surgery” to LOOK UP MY NOSE.
I could probably write a novella on just how many incompetent people I’ve ran into. Oh… and I had one guy give me a quote to mow my 3 acre yard ONCE… He said it’ll be $8,000… that’s not a typo. He said it’d take him 16 hours to mow 3 acres on his industrial sized law mower… and that he gets paid $500 per hour. Riiiiiight.

            • Kinda makes one sick doesnt it

            • I totally relate M. The current level of stupidity is just off the scale. I have similar experiences. They will become extinct and you and me will inherit the earth.

            • NASA’s version of redneck “Here hold my beer, watch this”….

      7. BTW If a celestial object of a large enough size hits earth it would cause Yellowstone to pop like squeezing a large ZIT!

        • Nlightened2; You got it right on!
They are probably expecting an asteroid hit(s).
Otherwise, why they would suddenly be so concerned?
One asteroid hit (half mile rock) in the middle of US, would trigger a cascade of catastrophic geological events including the eruption of Yellowstone.

        • Some would say that is exactly how yellowstone was created in the first place.
Created by the largest impact(s) on Earth. Yellowstone is actually a “pressure blowout” on the eastern rim of the crater. Falsly called a “supervolcano”. The real “Grand Volcano” is at the four corners. It created the Grand Canyon. Look for yourself.

      8. As long as they buy all the drilling equipment from ACME drilling and Mr W.E.Coyote to run the operation we should be good.

        • kk,

Hell no! Buy all that;s needed from HARBOR FREIGHT TOOLS!

the Chinaman will then be happy.

maybe we can have the NORK maniac blow off a few of his A-bombs underground to “loosen up” Mother Nature’s innards!

          • Sting, someone has to be DESPERATE to get anything from HARBOR FREIGHT.

      9. Today, a 3.2 earthquake in Portageville, Mo. New Madrid fault line.

      10. So, because we are all so afraid of how something might happen, we go ahead and make it happen?

My grandfather use to call this sort of behavior “borrowing trouble.”

Some moron decides to do a controlled release of volcanic pressure and collapses the Earth’s crust into the core, in a phenomena scientists will call “Reversed Mantle Polarity.”

@ Mac Slavo — You really need to do something to relieve your vocanophobia and lava hysteria. This is your third article about Yellowstone in as many weeks. May I recommend you try going out and tearing down a Confederate statue. I hear that helps.

        • I appreciate an article about a government agency that believes itself godlike. There is both smoke and fire in this article, thanks Mac.

        • Between fear porn and Obama ads on here, a recent article on return of Kings do com about personal purity suggest I stop reading this website for all the right reasons. Lately it’s been all fear porn and visual Obama googlads ipecac, so there is really nothing to see here. An echo chamber with different music is all…

      11. Tropical Storm Harvey is in the Caribbean heading toward Cancun. May become a hurricane. It may cross into the western part of the Gulf of Mexico after that. Texas has a 50/50 chance of getting at least a tropical storm. Check your insurance policies.

      12. Sounds like a lousy idea to me but what do I know. If there is money to be made the imperialists will bite. Look out below!

        • I am self insured. I’ll take my chances. Home Insurance is the biggest scam out there. Then after they a $5000 deductible off the top for your roof for wind, you basically are buying the entire roof yourself anyway. Best move is to get away from the coast line and up on to higher ground. That’s my insurance, Brains and common sense and location, location, location.

          • Wow…50 to 80 FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL…that’s genius…I’m thinkin’ you are an idiot if you think that that’s THE LOCATION as in location, location, location. BTW …if I lived in a crab, gator, sea lice infested, bunny, baby deer , harbor freight solar panel DELUXE equipped $4,995.00 sh*t hole, I woud’nt pay for Insurance either

      13. My guess would be that our government will successfully agitate and provoke another superpower into nuclear annihilation LONG BEFORE an eruption occurs!

        • our impending monetary collapse will be around sooner or later.

          • Very soon, sniper. Very soon.

      14. Playing with fire:

Is there a little volcano where experiments in “volcano intervention” might have smaller consequences. None in their right mind would experiment with an unproven technique on the largest and most dangerous super volcano. Better keep prepping. The higher the IQ, the lower their simple common sense; and, the more likely they are schizophrenic, arrogant, space cadets.

This reminds me of a five year old genius. They are little terrorists.

        _

        • They already are drilling into geothermal vents and pumping in water and using the steam to generate electricity. Its a coal fired powerplant with out any coal. Lots of them in Iceland and several in the western part of the USA.

          • Also here in Hawaii.
We could run the entire island off
Geothermal, if it weren’t for the
            ignorant, stupid Democrats, that rule
            over us.

            • Aint that the truth,
The geothermal venture was started in the 70s i believe, could have and should have already been turning dozens of turbines 24/7/365, but the enviro peeps, the activist hawaiians(just as stupid as BLM) and the state government squashed it, the OTEC pipe in Kona is another project that should have flown, but again, earth justice and sierra club screwed it over, thats why i just want to see everything come unglued, too many stupid people, the culling needs to be deep and needs to be permanent

        • I have an IQ of 178… and this is *very* obviously a *very* bad idea. And I’ve always hated how little people try to make themselves feel better by trying to belittle my ‘common sense’ because of my IQ. ‘Common sense’ isn’t nearly as common as it should be, regardless of IQ.

          • I have an IQ of seventeen point eight and I say the energy transference into the chamber is non linear.
Is possibly linked to cosmic ray incidence, which in turn may be linked to solar activity.
Hence the idea of energy leakage to prevent eruption is the equivalent of drinking a pint of sea water per day to stop sea level rise.
But what would I know’ I’m less than an idiot.

          • M:

I was joking. I love smart people.

            Are you from Kansas?

            _

          • Anything over 120 is overkill. The Spirit gives useful contemplation.
I had the idea long ago of drilling into volcanoes to let out magma to relieve pressure. Cooling the volcano might create increase magma pressure deeper.

        • B from CA:

I am an old timer from SHTF. Check the site once in a while. Gave you thumbs up for your 3— articles but my reply was never recognized. Got the same Xperts monitoring the site I suppose.

          • Granny:

I don’t respond to most because I don’t want to monopolize the conversation with back and forth. Don’t feel slighted.

            _

            • B,

That was a poor excuse if ever I saw one! ??

              • LEagle:
I don’t think either responses are an excuse. I think most people recognize that I am frequently jesting, and making light. I also rarely acknowledge responses which is self evident.

                _

          • POG, good to see you back. I’ve missed you.

          • Before throwing insults maybe you should consider that the article is not about whether one can produce electricity from magma, but rather if doing so can stop an eruption. I say no, but it may put it off for a very short while.

Eruptions are non linear events and so are the circumstances that produce them.
I don’t think anyone knows for sure but it seems cosmic ray incidence is linked, and this in turn is linked to solar output inversely.
Therefore there should be increased volcanic and seismic activity going forward and for some years yet.

Some such as myself think the sun is going into a very quiet period of considerable but unknown duration, leading to a higher probability of a very cold period, especially for the northern hemisphere.

      15. Maybe they should tap and cool those three man made suns burning under Japan. Prove they can control the consequences of their actions before shading the skies and tampering with nature. The list of successes is short, so short I cannot find a single one. Their failures however can fill volumes. Now let’s try giving an enema to a supervolcano. Let it be and leave us be. This volcano is like our government, too large to effectively control and both are going to blow, its just a matter of time.

        • Grandpa..Your comments are consistently the most enlightening posts on this site. May Yahweh continue to bless you. Keep the wisdom coming.

Yeshua…Altogether Lovely…The Fairest of Ten Thousand.

        • Where’s the like button?

      16. I’m gonna get the drilling contract. My brother will get the equipment contract. My other brother gets the insurance contract. All the other smaller stuff is wrapped up in bonds we market.

So – what else is new boys?

      17. At least ,if it is about money, it sounds eminently doable to my inexperienced volcanic mind. So, I would say let us give it a try on a smaller volcano. eh?

      18. Don’t worry, the country may not be worth saving in a few years.

        • I already have doubts about the prospect,,, if what we are seeing is any indication, were there already

      19. if its going to take tens of thousands of years then it isn’t going to cool it fast enough to do any good. and the explosion possibility is great. even without reaching the chamber just the vibrations from the drilling and the cracking of the cap. tiny cracks could travel from the drill site. once you hit the magma chamber its all going to blow up like an oil gusher evenif it doesn’t blow in the regular supervolcanic sense, and there goes your project.

      20. having been a professional geologist I find this totally humorous at best. Adding water will increase the steam pressure upward like happened at the old Roman city that was buried in ash. Your taking a tine effort at best that will have no real effect what so ever except to spend money All you can really do get out of the way and see what happens. Nothing may happen for the next 500 yrs. Its an imperfect guess at best no matter who is dong the guessing

      21. A guy I know thinks we need to cut a big canal through the mountians and let the Pacfic flood death valley. He think’s that it would create a lot of beneficial result. He thinks it would turn the USA into a tropical paradise like it was during prehistoric times.

        • He’s probably right but that’s gonna be a hard one to get through Congress.

      22. A pound of water evaporating (it is pressure dependent) takes give or take 1000 BTUs. In the process its volume (once again gas laws pressure / temp dependent) will expand 1600 times at atmospheric pressure.

        1. Thats one hell of a lot of water
        2. Thats some seriously large pumps
        3. Down that deep the pressure certainly will be “supercritical” 3206 PSI so the water and steam have the same density. Think of it as a grenade with the pin in. Allow it to drop in pressure with that heat and instant, and potentially massive, change in volume. The shock wave under this situation would be bomb like.

The potential geo thermal application if harnessed would be enormous.

I seen steam cut steel, blow out brick walls, bend steel and travel 60 ft as an invisible “death ray”.

        • Stationary engineer? I’ve worked on steam boilers but nothing above 5lbs.

          • Yes. Gold Seal Licensed unlimited capacity. Cut my eye teeth with 1920s – 40s vintage water tube boilers firing 6 fuel oil (bunker C) & refinery gas. Pressures 400 – 850 PSIG, 550 – 850 deg F and 12 MW with all accessory equipment turbines. Started up a modern 60 MW power plant 30 MW gas Turbine, two 15MW steam turbines and operated it for 15 years becoming an operations supervisor. Retired early with a bad ticker. I actually miss it. It was just enough technical / engineering with lots of hands on. The respect we got from the degreed engineers was flattering as we had 2 + decades and a pretty solid technical background to get their attention. We weren’t mere operators but truly “Engineers”.

            • K2,
              Good story!
I’m one of those nasty engineers and more used to
Pascals than PSI. One thing that always
surprised me was how much energy you could
              get from a steam turbine.
Strangely steam is about the most energy
efficient machines man has ever made.
              Transfer function thingy stuff.
But operating a boiler is really,
              really hot, hard work.
              Take care of that ticker,
              eat more spinach.

              • “But operating a boiler is really, really hot, hard work.”

Coal is rough, liquid fuel isn’t too difficult, gas (LPG / NG / Refinery gas) is a breeze. Old power plans were inside. I worked in 140 deg hear. Illegal but you do what toy have to do. You go in, give that 1000 turn 36″ valve one turn and get out, cool down and then back for another turn.

I computed efficiency (work out / work in) on a condensing turbine. It was in the 90% + using throttle / exhaust. Once you then compute the condenser the unit drops to 30% as 2/3 of the enthalpy goes with the steam to water. Cogen is the way to go. If process needs 50 PSI at 280 deg f @ 1220 enthalpy(trying to remember saturation temp from tables) you generate it at 1000 PSI at 900 def @ 1500 enthalpy, slip stream the mechanical HP and exhaust to process. Interestingly combined cycle power plants have now achieved 55% thermal efficiency with a condenser, amazing.

Impressive! Take care of that heart! I like your postings. Did you acquire a ‘heart problem’ from the kind of work you were doing?

                    • laeagle

Three decades of rotating shift work which I never adapted well to, chronic fatigue, always tired. Europe did lots of studies proving the relationship between rotating shift work and heart disease. The job had high stress too when you have a 60MW power plant, servicing an oil refinery under your control. Add in family history (an uncle died at 36 with an MI), grandfather heart disease, father heart disease and a propensity for eating what was tasty but not necessarily healthy along with about 1.5 packs a day for those 30 years. I’ll say I was the poster boy for heart trouble.

Three MIs later, two with VFib, 9 stints, chronic A fib and I’m still here. To anyone listening. If your waiting for numbness in your left arm / shoulder, to indicate that your at on on the verge of an MI so are many in the cemetery. It is generally indicative of an MI but also not the most common symptom. I was very fortunate to go into cardiac arrest not once but twice in the hospital with Physicians or nurses standing over me. It helps the odds of survival greatly.

                      Symptoms:

                      Nausea for no good reason
Not feeling well like a hangover with no headache and you didn’t drink.
                      Tight chest, weight on chest

Some of the above, maybe all of the above.

Crush a couple of aspirin and take it with minimum water (they might be cracking your chest open in a hour or two) and call 911. Preparing for WWIII, alien invasion, financial collapse with associated mayhem and ignoring the above is foolish.

                      Here end the lesson.

            • Kevin, very interesting. I’ve always enjoyed working on oil and gas fired boilers, steam or hydronic. Worked on some large ones in some of our big churches in my area, but then again nothing over 5lbs psi. Take care.

      23. Perhaps Superman could break off a glacier somewhere n plop it down on Yellowstone. That’d work.

        • They have glaciers in Iceland and their volcanos still erupt. The use the steam to make electricity. The drill holes and cap then and use steam turbines to generate electric.

          • He could just stuff it down in there I guess.

      24. Ok I know a bit about steam.I own and play with steam engines. (you can build one from a lawmower engine or buy them on the internet. They don’t need to drill into Yellowstone . All they need to do is pump the water into those gysers. However you could pump the great lakes into Yellowstone and it wouldn’t cool it enough to matter. Because the earths magnosphere catches the suns heat. and feeds that solar energy into the core and the core heats the volcanos. My steam engine when I shut it down or need to reduce pressure I don’t add cold water. Nope I put out the fire and it cools down. So we need to cool the core if we want Yellowstone to cool off. Kinda hard to do.

        • Old Guy

Yep the way its done is slowly start up and shut down. Thermal shock, water hammer is dangerous, potentially deadly. Turbines in the 100-1000 HP range are pretty cool to operate. Seen the aftermath of a failed overspeed trip. It operated at 3600 RPM. They believe it came apart at about 6000 RPM. Found an impulse blade from it bent to hell 50 yards away after it apparently bounced off I beams, piping and the like. Computed that it came off the rotor at 357 mag velocity.

          • Ive not got any training or broiler makers license. I just use whatever . old hot water heaters with two pop off valves. Ive made lots of steam had both valves pop off. The heater thumping and jumping up and down. No Broiler explosion yet. I quit using wood fires and switched to LP. I can turn off the LP quickly. A fire is hard to shut down. and you gotta get close to that steam bomb to douse the fire. I use high pressure hose between the broiler and my steam engine so im not close in case it explodes. Steam power is some of the most fun ive ever enjoyed. right up there with sex!

            • There was an incident where someone decided that a relief valve wasn’t necessary on a home hot water heater and had a bull plug in its place. The thermostatic controls failed, the burner never shut down and the end result was about 1/3 of the home was leveled. I’m not sure of hot water heaters but the safety factor on boilers from ASME Code is 5. So the bursting pressure is 5 x MAWP (maximum allowable working pressure).

My only regret was spending almost all of my adult working life on rotating shift work. I loved the job, hated the hours, I had chronic fatigue from lack of sleep for the better part of three decades. The $$$$ was way too good to walk away from. Its a very interesting line of work too.

      25. Translation, we’re going to go with resurgent dome eruption hypothesis, and we’ll hope the mantle hotspot believed to be catalyzed by “convection” is dead wrong.

Nothing like betting your life on Resurgent Dome Hypothesis, Hollow Earth Hypothesis (NO CONVECTION), and Expanding Earth Hypothesis (Ignores Density, Convergent-Divergent Plate Boundaries, Convection, and Subduction Zones…

Might I try suggesting these NASA scientists try their plan on the Sun first that way when they realize they’ve committed suicide doesn’t impact the populations of the Biomass.

      26. Doing nothing is NOT an option. It will blow eventually.

I had thought maybe we can drill with LASERs and slowly release the lava. This idea is better. Bleed the heat off slowly.

My other idea was we drill small holes(with LASERs)and feed liquid Nitrogen into them to cool the magma.

        • “It will blow eventually.”
No, that’s not likely true. If it were, it’d have be generating more heat as time goes by… If that were true “Old faithful” would be erupting more frequently as the years go by… which it’s not.
In other words… it’s in balance, doing *anything* could disrupt that balance and cause problems there… or elsewhere.

      27. The fools against doing something don’t understand (as usual). This is not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’. The longer we wait the bigger the explosion. It’s ALREADY a life on earth existential matter. It would be half the US gone!! The idea is to release heat. You don’t have to put water INTO the magma to release heat. Even releasing steam or magma would reduce pressure. It said COOLING will take a long time but stopping the INCREASE can be soon. Maybe we should let experts do the thinking instead of Saturday afternoon geniuses.

        • Meh,
Theres the problem, the assumption that man can battle mother nature,,,

      28. “The earth is filled with “pores” and this one is more like a boil but instead of a temperature compress or lancing, we seek to detonate a thermo-nuclear device exactly 1/2 mile below the surface of the Lake to shunt gases thus averting a National disaster. A team of “hot shots” is being assembled to travel this descent below the surface of the earth and when their mission is complete they will have 20 minutes to return to the surface and board a “life flight” to Bozeman. All residents will experience slight tremoring, and the distinct odor of methane, but not to worry, Yellowstone will soon be a safe place.”
H.R. “Henry” Terminer PhD, NASA Overseer, OSHA Approved, UKAS Certified, MGM Enabled, Microsoft Certified, Trump Associated.

      29. THAT REALLY HAS TO BE THE DUMBEST PLAN I’VE EVER HEARD THEM COME UP WITH. OBVIOUSLY A WAY FOR NASA TO BILK THE PUBLIC OUT OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS THEY WILL RE-DIRECT TO WHAT EVER SECRET PROJECTS THEY HAVE GOING ON. I CALL BS ON THIS ONE!(Damn cap lock key. I really should look at what the heck I’m doing!)

        • Nope, nope,,, the yelling is justified

      30. Maybe drop in Spock with the cold fusion Device like in the movies…oh yeah movies…….

      31. dave when your not certain the prudent thing is to do nothing. The rule of do no harm applies. I used to know a guy who was fond of saying( Well lets do something even if we know its probably wrong). There will be hell to pay but lets do something anyway. Ole Willum died a firery death.

      32. Anyone use tool sharpening services. I ran into an old buddy from years ago and we were talking about what we were doing for a living and he told me he works a local lawnmower shops grinding service and sharpens tools. I asked him could he sharpen anything he said yep if it’s got a cutting edge he can make it sharp. He gave me a card. Was thinking about bringing tools in. Just was wondering about rates didn’t ask was kinda in a hurry. This was a few years back don’t know if he’s still doing it but can anyone elaborate on using sharpening services on their knives axes saws scissors and whatever else they cut with. They gotta do a better job than me using files and a stone or grinder. I think they have specialized grinders to keep blades balanced.

        • They also should have special jigs to keep whatever blade at the right angle. Our guy does our lawnmower, jointer, and specialty blades. I do the chainsaws and woodworking tools.( I have a jig for the grinder). Especially for the lawnmowers/ zero turn, he is a godsend because he’s that good.

        • Ive been thinking about getting into something like that, only one other guy here doing it and he more specializes in scissors and chefs knives, seems like a good gig, not a lot o money in it but can dovetail with knifemaking and sales

      33. Old guy I’m with you on the do no harm by doing nothing. I have been in situations where there was a window of opportunity to do something but didn’t and kicked myself but have been ok anyway. That’s the thing about life sometimes we come to a crossroad and have to make a call what to do next. I’ve seen people freez up cus they are so used to doing nothing and paid the price for it too. Hesitation is the mother of all fuckups especially when we are talking life and death. I remember a story from 911 twin towers where this woman was over weight and this man dragged her down the stairs injuring her. This is something I’d do but at what point do you give up on her and say I gotta survive. I’m a believer in staying at least fit enough to make a sprint to the exit no matter how far that is. Everyone isn’t capable of being a grunt but striving for that ias much as possible is the goal. People are so used to their ac and heat and clean bedding and clothes with drive up window hot food that the pain and misery of reality will crush people psychologically make will give up and die or call it quit and take their own life. Civilized life has made people feel entitled to it. ive seen people go into denial and shock and totallyrefuse to believe shit is happening to them in a personal shtf situation.

      34. As a geochemist (Volcanics) I’m not sure which is worse, the stupid NASA idea or the nonsensically written paragraph that begins “Yellowstone currently leaks….” At least the bad paragraph won’t kill people.

      35. What would happen if a Nuclear weapon or multiple weapons targeted the Caldera by say the Norks, and they penetrated the dome?
That is I think a scary scenario I thought of as a way our enemies could make short work of us quickly, There should be defense that protect it somewhat I would think.

      36. Quite a problem but rather than injecting water into the magma chamber would it not be easier and less risky to just put more water on top of the caldera to contain the pressure? Build some Hoover style dams to on the Yellowstone and whatever other rivers flow out of the caldera and put the weight of 500 or more feet of water over the magma chamber.

      37. All this engineer talk about calderas kinda reminds poor ol grandee of her pressure canner, which by the way, she has been running non stop for several days.

        Steam venting.
Processing pressures (11 lbs (76 kpa) dial gauge).
        Natural, not forced cooling.

I duno, kinda sounds like the same thing.

Forced cooling at the end of the canning cycle is a big no no.
**”Do not force cool the canner. Forced cooling may result in food spoilage.”**

or earth spoilage where the caldera is concerned??

        • ???
Im with you on that one, dont think forcing mother nature is a good plan

      38. Yeah like adding water to molten rock sounds like a brilliant plan
And one moron had the idea of pumping it under the molten rock
Yeah man , let’s do that , fuckin shake my dam head

        Fuckin idiots
Biggest molten bomb you ever saw shit flyin everywhere
        Dumbasses

      39. It’s been around 640,000 years since Yellowstone last erupted. And an NSF scientist doesn’t think it will erupt for another 1-2 million years because it is in a “dying cycle”. So WHY are NASA scientists worried about it erupting now? Could it have ANYTHING to do with the possibility of creating a geothermal plant to generate electric power so that someone can get rich? But how do you get the public to go along with building a geothermal plant in a national park, and how do you get taxpayers to fund it? It sounds like you use the FEAR of annihilation from eruption along with the enticement of “green” energy (to appease the environmentalists). Why is everything always about the money? http://earthsky.org/earth/will-the-yellowstone-supervolcano-erupt-in-your-lifetime

      40. But hey, pay no attention to Antifa doings…What good is a Constitution when we live subject to the tyranny of an unelected fringe that is running things now? The same violent fringe that so far is ignored by the elected government? So what if you have a law that protects your right to guns if you fail to use them to preserve that law from the fringe and you surrender to the lunatics fring’s mob rule?! What is more dangerous, the terrorist overseas THREATENING TO ATTACK YOU or the one that is bashing your skull with bats and bike locks, throwing acid in your faces and burning down your neighborhood successfully on your own sidewalks? FFS, people are stupid to focus on existential danger to ignore the bleeding and trauma they already have.

        • Volcanoes are cracking skulls on your street, are they? Yeah, I thought so.

      41. The last line of the article reads:
“The cooling of Yellowstone in this manner would take of thousands of years.”
I think I’ll worry more about the volcano blowing naturally 🙂

      42. FRAC a caldera…brilliant idea!!!

        s/

        • Fracking Idiots

      43. This whole supervolcano fear mongering scheme has just revealed itself. The plan all along has been to exploit the geothermal properties of the area for power generation. Knowing that the people would never agree to allowing power companies to come in and ruin the pristine wilderness area with power plants scattered everywhere, they create a problem that generates fear and then come up with a solution that will resolve the problem. This is how the public has been played on everything from wars to accepting being injected with toxins in the name of disease prevention. They will continue to use this tactic as long as it keeps working. Time to wake up and smell the roses.

      44. Hey, I’m not a robot posting random spam. WTF!

      45. Earth is in cool down mode, as more heat escapes itself thus warming polar caps releasing more ice into oceans. The net affect is cooling (80% water surface to 20% land surface).

Thus, nature is recycling as it should be. Evolution considered, wars-famine-plagues naturally or with man made events, especially with religion differences, exponential humankind growth is due for a correction soon.

My 2 cents would be: Cool the land mass “around” the caldron (excavate a channel, like the Suez Canal) from the ocean and gradually reduce by induction the surrounding base.

        What do I know…

Lastly, fret not earth has it’s own time table and we’ll join the millions or billions of past inhabitants prior to our current generation over these past 4-5 thousand years.

      46. Yellowstone is a threat to civilization in the South, the East, and the Midwest. It is not a grave threat to the West Coast, or Europe, or Asia. And it’s eruption would be an annoyance for the world, in general. Yes, atmospheric dimming is a problem, but Northern Hemisphere nuclear winter is unlikely. Think “a year without a summer”.

Yellowstone, as a hot-spot volcano, can only be “targetted” with geothermal plants by building a new one every couple hundred years. This is due to the movement of the continental plate that the U.S. rides on. (This won’t bother the scientists – they’ll be expecting us to fund a similar project willingly to keep electricity, despite the likelihood of the U.S. being fully solar (or achieving fusion) by then.)

Also, with regard to the magma chamber being discussed: http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2015/04/two-huge-magma-chambers-spied-beneath-yellowstone-national-park
(The gist is that we now know where the plume that fills the known chamber comes from – a bigger, deeper chamber. This bigger chamber was always there, so the eruption chance doesn’t change. Instead, we know how unlikely it is for the pattern of eruptions to end.)

Also not being considered, and probably off-topic, is the preferential absorbtion of high energy rays by the silicates in the magma chamber. (The evidence suggests that the silicates in the magma chamber are the kind that absorb high energy rays. (Figures.)) These high energy rays are apparantly more prevalent in periods of low solar activity due to the ‘thinning’ (in thickness, not quantity) of the Earth’s atmosphere as a result of reduced flaring by the Sun. Each flare adds some energy to the high atmosphere, causing it to expand. High energy rays supposedly have a higher chance to be deflected or absorbed if they interact with air particles farther away from the planet. Also, reduced flaring by the Sun is matched by a weaker solar wind, which reduces the overall particle count in the inner solar system. Finally, hydrogen (the primary constituent of the solar wind) absorbs certain frequencies readily, re-emitting them as heat. (Lots of reasons to dislike a solar minimum plus a planetary magnetic field flip.))
