It certainly seems like volcanoes are erupting all over the world right now, and the newest region to attract scientists’ attention, is the Canary Islands. After hundreds of mini-earthquakes were this week, experts were called in to monitor a potential eruption.
According to The Daily Mail UK, the situation could quickly become volatile. Seismic experts have been called in to carry out tests on the Canary Island of La Palma after fears that an active volcano may erupt. Hundreds of mini-earthquakes have been recorded on the island in the past few weeks, and scientists are now monitoring the seismic activity on La Palma 24 hours-a-day. Tests will be carried out on the slopes of the island’s active volcano, Cumbre Vieja, to attempt to calculate any potential risk of an eruption.
Cumbre Vieja, on the volcanic ocean island of La Palma, near Tenerife, last erupted in 1971. But the hundreds of mini-earthquakes are prompting fears that it could go again – and soon. A slew of tiny tremors beneath the volcano’s surface in just a matter of hours this week have reportedly caused lava to rise up from beneath. Scientists will sample underground water, measure PH levels, conductivity, temperature, and radon dissolved gas activity, according to The Express.
All of this new testing was launched as a “hydrogeochemical monitoring program,” will see tests conducted three times a week at four different points on the volcano. The 350 mini-earthquakes have prompted scientists to probe deeper into the volcanoes eruption potential. The National Geographic Institute (NGI) notes that a team is to be sent to La Palma to carry out CO2 profiles and structural studies of Cumbre Vieja.
A majority of the tremors were so small, that they could not be detected by scientists and were not felt by any residents on La Palma. Between October 6 and 7, more than 40 tremors were recorded, with the most powerful hitting 2.7 on the Richter scale and located at a depth of 17.4 miles. A few days without any tremors followed. Then, between October 10 and 13, seismographers on La Palma picked up another swarm of tremors, taking the total to 352 in just ten days. On October 13 alone, some 44 quakes were recorded at depths of between 9.3miles and 13.6miles, the most powerful at 2.1 on the Richter scale.
In a report published on Saturday, the NGI adds that one of the reasons for the high number of tremors could be the three new monitoring stations in the area.

What they failed to mention surprisingly is if it goes and a chunk of the island falls in the ocean creates massive tsunami that would take out Florida. Look it up
Sorry, can’t happen. See my comment below.
Why is this volcano so dangerous? Because part of the volcano is ready to slide off into the atlantic ocean. It can cause a 1500 ft tsunami that would cross the Atlantic ocean and devastate the east coast of north and south America. Hope my latest package from FL gets here soon. (Sarc off.)
wHERE DID YOU HEAR THAT FROM, NLIGHTED2????!!!
yep. Remember reading about that a few yrs back.
Volcano erupts. Long run out land slide. tsunami.
about 8 hrs to reach east side of U.S.A.
worrisome.
I’d heard the same thing. Here’s a good article: ht tp://blogs.britannica.com/2011/06/simulating-atlantic-tsunamis-5-questions-geophysicists-steven-ward-simon-day/
I’ve been following this guy http://www.dutchsinse.com for awhile making his one week forecasts. On average 3/4’s of the time he’s nailing it, in where, when and how big. And, a lot of times when he proclaims it a miss, it’s not off by all that much.
Currently, at his website above, he’s calling for;
10/25/2017 — LARGE EARTHQUAKE THREAT BUILDING IN PACIFIC — WEST COAST USA , JAPAN, INDONESIA, CENTRAL AMERICA ON WATCH
Anyways, put him to the test for yourself, and if you find him as spot on as I have you might want to start following him closer for whatever big he says coming next.
The Cascadia fault is the one that has me concerned. It did not stop me from staying at Cannon Beach OR a year ago for a week, but I was always sure I knew my way to high ground, and stayed at a hotel above the tsunami “level.”
Dutchsinse has an interesting explanation on
this hypothesis from the 4:30 mark to 15:04
mark. La Palma has already split in half and
didn’t have anywhere to fall to because the
island gradually slopes on the westward side
but drops off about 3,000 to 5,000 feet on
the back side. If it were to calve off it
would slide to the east and the wave would
hit Europe or Africa. It would have to fall
off more than a few hundred feet to cause
a tsunami. Not a likely scenario just more
fear porn.

Thanks for the link BDNB. Always appreciate source info like this.
And the tsunami will wipe out the east coast and the west coast is going to exit literally or physically, probably both. Disaster or redemption? The choice is easy, sink or swim or keep on keeping on. But sorry, I am fresh out of progressive lifeboats. The thing is, I would have helped if you did not try to pervert this country, if you were in support of the Constitutional rights of everyone and respected long learned and hard fought societal norms and mores. Here is a rock, I hope it helps.

It certainly seems like volcanoes are erupting all over the world right now, and the newest region to attract scientists’ attention, is the Canary Islands.
Seems to be.
Could have an effect on weather world wide. May contribute to lower temperatures in seasonal changes. Impact growing seasons, shorter time to plant and harvest. Colder winters in some areas and extreme in others.
This one in the posting, could wipe out much of the East Coast if the part that has cracked and slipped somewhat falls into The Atlantic and perhaps the alleged consideration relocation of The Nations Capital to Fort Collins, Co may not end up so alleged after all.
For more reading on this, see https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2004/aug/10/science.spain or http://www.geo.arizona.edu/~andyf/LaPalma/doomsday.html from Univ. of Arizona geology dept. MOST of these things never happen, we get it (so no need for the doomer porn comments, we get it). However, for those of you who like to remain informed about issues of significance, like I do, this is of interest. I don’t think we will be hit by an asteroid, see this volcano and Yellowstone go, and have a 1929 stock market meltdown all in one day. On the other hand, I also don’t think 100 years from now, nothing of massive impact, such as this volcano, will NOT have happened. I like preparedness because it allows one to not live in fear, but even more, allows one to live with the self respect that self reliance brings one. Also, if there ever were an major issue, like in Puerto Rico right, now, you would not only not be a burden to others, but also be able to help the weak, the infants, the elderly, etc.
Truth is, most of these things are low/very low probability, high impact. I lived in Vancouver, BC when Mt. St. Helens went off, about 300 miles, and we HEARD if go off all that distance away, so that kinda sobers one! (If I recall correctly, there were some geologists ON the mtn when it went off. Not trying to be flippant, but boy, what a way to go!
Is this area part of the infamous ring of fire?
NO, the canaries are off the coast of Africa SW of Spain.
Nope. The Ring of Fire is in the Pacific. The Canary Islands are off the West Coast of Africa.
Kev, “ring of fire” is generally the area starting from southern Chile, up thru Mexico, the US Cascades, into BC/Alaska, over to Japan, skirting the coast of China (may go inland a bit, can’t remember), and then into Indonesia. This MIGHT be part of the Atlantic Rift, that goes thru Iceland, but I’m not sure. BTW, if you ever get a chance to go to Iceland it is MAGNIFICENT. The world’s first Parliament, the Thingvellir, about 1/3 across the island, is right on the rift, and you an actually see the tectonic plates. Very cool. It actually created a natural speaker’s podium where crowds could hear voices easily, so that is why it was chosen.
If you go, take Iceland Air and use their hotels. They to a great job. If you golf, they do a lot of that there, and don’t forget Gulfoss waterfall, the Blue Lagoon, and Vatnajokull.
BTW, there are 40 Viking era farms that are CURRENTLY buried under the Vatnajokull glacier (which I have walked on) that were functioning farms 1000 years ago. I.e., it was WARMER 1,000 years ago. They know this from extant deeds (Vikings, despite their barbarity, were BIG record keepers of stuff like this). Skaftafell Natl Park actually has plaques about this. Greenland was similarly warmer than today during the MWP (Medieval Warm Period). Scientists KNOW this – even the lead global warmer Phil Jones of East Anglia Univ. was forced to admit this to BBC after his ClimateGate scam came to light
Truth is, using the words of Dr. Richard Lindzen, prof of atmospheric science at MIT, Dr. William Gray, considered the #1 hurricane forecaster in the world, and John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel, anthropogenic global warming is – in THEIR own words – a “scam.” You can go to Youtube and search for “John Coleman+ global warming” and hear him say so himself.
Sorry, “this” in my post above referring to the Canaries, and the Atlantic rift thru Iceland, not the ring of fire on the other side of the planet
YEAH, I READ ABOUT LINDZEN YEARS AGO… HE WAS ON THE LIST OF THE HIGHLY PAID climate change deniers paid by the FOSSIL FUEL INDUSTRY– A WELL-KNOWN CLIMATE CHANGE DENIER… (until the list was erased!)
WHILE 97% OF TOP SCIENTISTS IN THE WORLD SAY THAT GLOBAL WARMING IS HAPPENING AND LARGELY CAUSED BY BURNING FOSSIL FUELS, THIS SCUM (LINDZEN) IS BEING PAID TONS OF MONEY TO DENY THE SCIENCE.
REAL SCUM!!! We are about to lose a livable climate due to scum like Lindzen! Why mention him??!
“Take him out back! Tie him up!”
It is fitting that a BIG GREEN MONEY ***FRAUD** like you comes on as anonymous. Quod erat demonstrandum. You science deniers are a complete, utter fraud. To wit: Since when has science been decided by consensus – of which there is none, BTW- rather than hypothesis testing and experimentation? Care to tell me, Sir Fraud? Since, perhaps, Copernicus? Since the Galileo announcment againt that consensus? Since Ignaz Semmelweis was drummed out of the medical biz in the 1800s for insisting his medical staff wash their hands between patients (consensus was there was no such thing as germs). Perhaps since Hitler had published 100 Scientist Against Einstein? And you are too stupid, apparently, to know who Dr. William Gray is, or John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel, right?
Worse, you are ignorant of Stanley Goldberg of the U.S.’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) who says about all the hot air surrounding Gore’s global warming “It is a blatant lie put forth in the media that makes it seem there is only a fringe of scientists who don’t buy into global warming.” Paul Reiter of the Pasteur Inst. has gone one step further and threatened legal action against the IPCC to have his name removed from their global warming document, calling it a sham, and Frederick Seitz Past President of the National Academy of Sciences sponsored a petition against the whole global warming façade at http://www.oism.org/pproject/. Over 19,000 scientist have signed this petition , as opposed to the 600 the U.N. could scrounge up, and some of these 600 have since reconsidered their past agreement, such as Nobel Prize winning physicist Ivar Giaever who stated in an update to the U.S. Senate Minority report for 2007 that “Global warming has become a new religion” and “I am a skeptic.” Later, in 20011, Giaver upped the ante by resigning from the American Physical Society, stating “”The claim … is that the temperature has changed from ~288.0 to ~288.8 degree Kelvin in about 150 years, which (if true) means to me is that the temperature has been amazingly stable, and both human health and happiness have definitely improved in this ‘warming’ period.”
Japanese scientist Kiniori Itoh, another former IPCC member has called Gorian warming a “scientific scandal,” while noting that people “will feel deceived by science and scientists” when they learn the truth. For a complete list of signees to the OISM petition – which includes a simply staggering number of Ph.Ds, – see http://www.oism.org/pproject/., where they are arranged in alphabetical order. Meanwhile a similar petition at http://www.petitionproject.org as of Jan., 2010 – had 31,486 scientist signatures, including 9,029 with Ph.Ds, disagreeing with anthropogenic global warming (the minimum qualifier to be on the petition is a BA in a field related to climate).
… and a few more. Watch as the intellectually dishonest, anti-science Anon slinks away. Bet on it.
“Climate is not responding to greenhouse gases in the way we thought it might. If increasing carbon dioxide is in fact increasing climate change, its impact is smaller than natural variation.”Prof Christopher de Freitas, of the University of Auckland, NZ said there was no evidence to suggest carbon dioxide was the major driver of climate change (see http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/8039) (In 2003, Dr. de Freitas, who edits the journal Climate Research, had published a peer-reviewed article saying the recent warming is not unusual, relative to previous historical climate changes in the past 1,000 years. As you might suspect, Dr. de Freitas had to withstand multiple demands he be fired from his editorial job, as well as his university position.
“We’re not scientifically there yet. Despite what you may have heard in the media, there is nothing like a consensus of scientific opinion that this is a problem. Because there is natural variability in the weather, you cannot statistically know for another 150 years.” — UN IPCC’s Tom Tripp, a member of the UN IPCC [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] since 2004 and listed as one of the lead authors and serves as the Director of Technical Services & Development for U.S. Magnesium.
“The dysfunctional nature of the climate sciences is nothing short of a scandal. Science is too important for our society to be misused in the way it has been done within the Climate Science Community.” The global warming establishment “has actively suppressed research results presented by researchers that do not comply with the dogma of the [UN] IPCC.” — Swedish Climatologist Dr. Hans Jelbring of the Paleogeophysics & Geodynamics Unit at Stockholm University.
“The whole idea of anthropogenic global warming is completely unfounded. There appears to have been money gained by Michael Mann, Al Gore and UN IPCC’s Rajendra Pachauri as a consequence of this deception, so it’s fraud.” — South African astrophysicist Hilton Ratcliffe, a member of the Astronomical Society of Southern Africa (ASSA) and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific and a Fellow of the British Institute of Physics
“Please remain calm: The Earth will heal itself — Climate is beyond our power to control…Earth doesn’t care about governments or their legislation. You can’t find much actual global warming in present-day weather observations. Climate change is a matter of geologic time, something that the earth routinely does on its own without asking anyone’s permission or explaining itself.” — Nobel Prize-Winning Stanford University Physicist Dr. Robert B. Laughlin, who won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1998, and was formerly a research scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
“Over the years, the IPCC has changed from a scientific institution that tries to be policy relevant to a political institution that pretends to be scientific. I regret that. There are already more than enough climate activists, while there are too few solid and neutral bodies that make down-to-earth and well-founded statements about climate change and climate policy.” Economist Richard Tol, in a prepared statement for the Dutch parliament examining climate-related controversies http://nofrakkingconsensus.blogspot.com/2010/04/seasoned-veterans-view-of-ipcc.html, or http://www.Climategate.nl
Sir Fred Hoyle – who should need no introduction to anyone past a junior high education – said about the climate modeling that keeps failing: “Understanding the Earth’s greenhouse effect does not require complex computer models in order to calculate useful numbers for debating the issue… To raise a delicate point, it is not very sensible to make approximations… and then perform a highly complicated computer calculation, while claiming arithmetical accuracy of the computer as the standard for the whole investigation.” (In fact the famed W.C. Rontgen wrote in 1894 about models, noting “It is almost always possible to compare the results of thought processes with reality to provide the experimental scientist with the proof he needs. If the result does not agree with reality, the former in necessarily incorrect, even if the speculation that led to the result was ever so ingenious or fanciful.” – cited from A.N. Tschaeche of the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, in Chemical Health and Safety, July/Aug. 1996)
David Legates of the University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean, & Environment, who is skeptical of climate change predictions of catastrophe, realized years ago that his independent position means that he should not accept corporate money for research or speaking fees. “There’s a lot more money to be made by saying the world is coming to an end than to say that this is a bunch of hooey.”
Professor Emeritus Friedrich Karl Ewert a geologist from Paderborn University noted the “evaluation of long-term temperature readings . . . disprove that we have man-made global warming,” and presented the results of his analysis at a CFACT meeting in 2011 that of over 1,100 temperature curves from around the world, concluding, “the final result is that in 74% of all stations of the world we had no warming.” While the UN has often been told there will be terrible consequences if the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere remains at or increases from the current 390 parts per million (ppm), Dr. Ewert pointed out that “in the geological past, we had the greatest glaciation of the earth (the glacier went down to 35 degrees north) when we have carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere of 1400 [ppm]. That means it was several times higher than today.” In other words, the historical evidence proves CO2 does not control earth’s climate. Dr. Ewert summarizes “It is necessary to conclude that the particular effect of manmade carbon dioxide production is not recognizable, in other words, does not exist.”
Not so fast there, plenty of credible scientists differ with the global warming is mostly man made assertion and that more CO2 is even bad…
http://www.petitionproject.org/
This is true, Shane. My point is that there is NO consensus, not even close. Moreover, “consensus,” as Feynman pointed out, is NOT science. In fact, there has been ZERO global warming since 1998. How does that comport with your assertions?
Truth is, the fascist left refuses to engage in the cardinal means of resolving scientific issues – OPEN debate. Why? And how do you think the estimate of $93 freaking trillion spent on AGW over the next 15 years, per the Financial Stability Bd, impacts science. What about Mikey Mann’s fake hockey stick? Do you still believe in that? Do you even remember Climategate? Do you know what the LIA is, the MWP? If not, then respectfully, you should not be commenting.
More: The Archeological Survey of Canada says that the tree line was 100 km NORTH of today’s line. Why? Are you aware that Kegwin’s study of marine radioisotopes in the Sargasso Sea shows that while we are indeed above the historic low temps of the LIA 100 yeaers ago and more, *** we are STILL below, today, the 3,000 year ave. temp.*** Even the IPCC admits there has been zero global warming since 1998.
Open debate, fine. But that isn’t what the fascist left wants, and for good reason. You control energy, you control everything it touches, which is EVERYTHING.
The gold standard of science is hypothesis testing and experimentation. Would that the fascist left warmers engage in that, rather than their utterly anti-science “consensus” scam. As Einstein told folks when Hitler trotted out the same argument with his 100 Scientists AGainst Einstein, Albert famously replied “Why 100? If their facts are right, only ONE is needed.”
AGW is a scam. Sorry, but it is.
And why is our dear Mr Ignoranymous on as anonymous? Because he just may be a shill for BIG GREEN MONEY. In fact, the Financial Stability Bd recently estimated $93 TRILLION would be spent on faux AGW over the next 15 years. You can bet Mr. Anti-science Ignoranonymous is at the trough for some of that dough!
But… let’s help our dear, ignorant anon, shall we, since he doesn’t like Dr.Lindzen, and has never heard of the Weather Channel. Patrick Moore, co-founder of Greenpeace (I have been on the Sea Shepherd actually) also discovered the fraud, noting ”
“I am a skeptic on climate change. I know the climate is changing, and it always has been. I’ve studied this intensively over many years. I started what I call the Carbon Project here in British Columbia back in 1989 in order to bring everybody together to discuss this subject and figure out the facts behind it. Since then, I have watched as hysteria has grown, as if the whole world is going to come to an end and civilization is going to die because of humans causing this climate change. I don’t buy that, and I certainly know we don’t have any proof of it. I’m not denying that we might be playing some role, but the natural factors that have always caused climate change have not suddenly disappeared. I’m very skeptical of the alarmist nature of climate campaigning.” – Patrick Moore, co-founder of Greenpeace, http://www.theenergyreport.com/pub/na/11079
Moore also stated “We are dealing with pure political propaganda that has nothing to do with science,” and in 2015 wrote “My skepticism (about the global warmers) begins with the believers’ certainty they can predict the global climate with a computer model. The entire basis for the doomsday climate change scenario is the hypothesis increased atmospheric carbon dioxide due to fossil fuel emissions will heat the Earth to unlivable temperatures. In fact, the Earth has been warming very gradually for 300 years, since the Little Ice Age ended, long before heavy use of fossil fuels. Prior to the Little Ice Age, during the Medieval Warm Period, Vikings colonized Greenland and Newfoundland, when it was warmer there than today. And during Roman times, it was warmer, long before fossil fuels revolutionized civilization.”
You sir, are a fool, a fraud or a phony. Perhaps all three.
Look, if there’s going to be a big earthquake there, Dutchsinse will warn us about it. So watch his YT live updates every evening (or as often as you can), and take his forecasts seriously. In fact, you can take him WAY more seriously than the fools at the US Geological Survey or any other hoity-toity “experts.” There’s a good reason why YT and all the powers that be HATE this guy…
I don’t think there are anymore
Volcano’s erupting today than there
has ever been. We have much better
monitoring and in today’s world,
a more spread out, and larger population
to be affected. As a consequence it
looks worse than it really is.
The Canary islands have Volcano’s
that are going to erupt again.
America has lots of volcano’s
that will erupt again, some with
disastrous results on nearby populations.
Rainier, Yellowstone, Mauna Loa, Hulalalai,
are all listed as active.
Others like Hood and Shasta
are “dormant active”.
They could all erupt tomorrow and it would
not surprise me.
Aloha
We’re doomed! Run away! Wheee! On the other hand, it could happen.
If fascism ever come to America, it will come in the name of liberalism

Nothing could be better than a tsunami headed for DC NY MIA and other coastal shtholes
Canary Islands, New Madrid seismic zone, Yellowstone volcanic eruption, San Andreas, cascadia subduction, and Ring of Fire. Where you going to go? Add to that, economic collapse and nuclear war and there is a strong possibility that you will die one day. Smile and be happy! It won’t help but it will make the powers that be nervous. They will think that you are up to something!
A landslide/collapse of Cumbre Vieja cannot create a damaging tsunami. (there would be a tsunami, but it would be measured in centimeters)
I don’t understand why this particular urban legend won’t die. I thought it had been thoroughly debunked years ago.
Two words: “water displacement”.
A landslide can displace no more water than the volume of the land that slides into the water.
An earthquake caused tsunami (like the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004) lifts the entire water column above it; an enormous volume of water.
Fill a child’s plastic swimming pool to the brim, and then lift one side — that’s a tsunami.
Fill the same pool, and then drop a golf ball into it from an inch above the water — that’s a landslide.
The volume and depth of the body of water involved (in this case the Atlantic Ocean) is one of the determining factors in the size of a tsunami. Litya Bay in Alaska is the best example. A landslide like Cumbre Vieja created a tsunami higher than any other ever seen; but this was because instead of being like dropping a golf ball in a kiddie pool from an inch above, it was like dropping that golf ball into a highball glass from six feet up. The Bay was so narrow that, although deep, the mass of the landslide displaced almost all of the water in the bay, and still the only place hit by a tsunami was the other side of the tiny bay. The same landslide in the Atlantic Ocean would be a tiny drop in a huge bucket.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1958_Lituya_Bay_megatsunami#/media/File:Lituya_Bay_overview.jpg
You don’t need a PhD in geophysics to figure this out.
Don’t you mean to add “speed” to your displacement note? A 1 km asteroid also won’t displace much water, but the impact changes the equation. Please comment if you see this. Thanks.
Yes. And yes.
I was trying the K.I.S.S. method with a simple (simplistic) analogy.
The analogy of the golf ball in the kiddie pool from an inch above still holds. A meteor impact woulf be more like shooting the water in the kiddie pool with a .50 cal (or something larger, depending on the size of the meteor).
But you’re absolutely right — speed kills. F = ma.
In the case of a meteor, it’s mostly the acceleration (a) that makes them so dangerous.
A meteor with the same mass as a Cumbre Vieja landslide would be a yoooj problem. Yoooj!
An earthquake tsunami (like in 2004) has less to do with (a) and more to do with the sheer mass (m) of water moved. A landslide just doesn’t have enough mass(m) or acceleration(a) to have enough force(F) to create a large tsunami.
There are lots of sources of fear-porn these days, I just don’t think a landslide-induced tsunami is anything to fear … unless you live on a small bay surrounded by large mountains.
“A landslide just doesn’t have enough mass(m) or acceleration(a) to have enough force(F) to create a large tsunami.”
I should have added: “in the Atlantic Ocean.”
The volume of water matters. In Lituya bay, the highest tsunami waves ever. In the Atlantic … not so much.
