New MPG Mandates on Cars Will Raise Prices, But We’ll Save on Gas

According to the Associated Press New mileage rules: Pay more for cars, less at pump:

Drivers will have to pay more for cars and trucks, but they’ll save at the pump under tough new federal rules aimed at boosting mileage, cutting emissions and hastening the next generation of fuel-stingy hybrids and electric cars.

The new standards, announced Thursday, call for a 35.5 miles-per-gallon average within six years, up nearly 10 mpg from now.

By setting national standards for fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions from tailpipes, the government hopes to squeeze out more miles per gallon whether you buy a tiny Smart fortwo micro car, a rugged Dodge Ram pickup truck or something in between.

The rules will cost consumers an estimated $434 extra per vehicle in the 2012 model year and $926 per vehicle by 2016, the government said. But the heads of the Transportation Department and Environmental Protection Agency said car owners would save more than $3,000 over the lives of their vehicles through better gas mileage.

With a depreciating dollar, less oil to be had because of increasing emerging market demand, and more government taxes on everything from grocery bags to soda pop, does anybody really believe they will save any money on gas?

Not only will we pay more for cars, including the up and coming Value Added Tax, but we can expect higher gas prices. While we don’t have the computational power or modeling systems of the Transportation Department and EPA, we feel that our guess is as good as their’s. Even though we might be using a bit less gas, our guess is that we’ll pay more for cars AND gas.

      1. Save money my ass, with the Fed’s curent obscene levels of money printing gasoline eventually will be $8.00-$10.00 a gallon.   So you can thank A-hole Obama for your little car and high priced gasoline.    That low life prick will be in a limousine for life, compliments of D.C. corruption and the U.S. taxpayer.

Save money my ass.  With the Fed’s curent obscene levels of money printing gasoline eventually will be $8.00-$10.00 a gallon.   So you can thank A-hole Obama for your little car and high priced gasoline.    That low life prick of a president will be in a limousine for life, compliments of Washington D.C. corruption and the U.S. taxpayer.

      3. Actually, if gas prices go up then a gas stingy car will save the owner even more over the life of the auto compared to a lower mileage car.  Just would be nice if they let market forces sell the gas stingy cars.
But if they are planning for Gubberment Motors to make more gas stingy cars then it makes sense for them to create a market for their product through legislation.
        Buckle Up!

      4. And when Government motors makes this piece of junk they are going to peddle on us it will be made of cardboard and plastic , it will crush to nothing in a 5 mph crash ! Made by someone who won’t give a damn if he put in all the nuts and bolts or not , so when it goes out on the street it will fall apart in 10 minutes after you leave the dealership , Who will in turn do nothing about it . I can see this coming from a mile away !

      5. What about the resulting injuries and deaths from being in little cardboard/plastic vehicles? What’s the cost?

New Dept of Transportation czar want us all on bicycles anyway: That’s where this is going – Pre-industrial society of serfs.

      6. AB71:   Can you say, “Corvair”? Guess its time for you to take the Nash metro out of the garage and dust it off!   🙂

      7. And more people will die in crashes as cars/trucks are made smaller and lighter.

      8. amazing to me ( absolutely amazing ) how many of you posters don’t realize there is no real fundamental differences between the republicans and the democrats. it’s all play act bullsh**. they both want your wealth while they tinker at the fringes. . the’re all the same monkeys with different masks.

      9. Z , I would love to own a Nash Metro !  As for the Corvair , Years ago I red a book by ralph nadar titled  ” unsafe at any speed ” the book was all lies and half truths . It destroyed the corvair so that nadar could make a name for him self .  To Sofa , do you expect that Government motors to let you sue them if the junk they sell kills your loved ones ?  CLUSTERFOX : get real , the dems just showed you what they think of you by passing this health care crap , NOT ONE republican voted for it. I can go on and on with differences , but will you really understand ?  I doubt it . Amazing (absolutely amazing ) that someone actually thinks like this !!

      10. CLUSTERFOX:   You get my vote. There ARE basic differences in theory, but in practice the results are the same. Less individual liberty, less opportunity, more government, bigger deficits, and more taxes. No one should listen to what they say. They all talk a good game.

But every word that comes out of their mouths is a lie!
