Preppers sometimes make mistakes. I know I have! It’s a learning experience for certain! For the most part, prepping mistakes are difficult to make, but this one seems popular: storing rice in a used soda bottle.
There are several reasons why this is a bad idea, but there are also alternatives to the problem. Reusing soda bottles for food
and water storage is more misinformation than anything, but it is a dangerous concept and one that keeps circulating on the Internet. Here is why you should NOT use a used soda bottle for food storage:
But, the good news is that the solutions are fairly easy and inexpensive. Obviously, it’s better to store your food in a used soda bottle than not store food at all, however, consider attempting to keep your food in something other than BPA-laced plastic. Some options are:
Don’t make this common mistake when prepping. Make sure your food is stored as safely as your budget will allow. Not much will be worse than getting sick during an emergency. Save those used soda bottles for mosquito traps!
Happy Prepping!

Bleach. A few drops of bleach will kill 99.9% of germs. Just wash out your containers and rinse with a little bleach in the rinse water. Better than boiling.
Another thing about canning is you don’t need to boil the jars first. Just make sure they are clean before packing. The canner or pressure cooker will sterilize everything in it.
Silver is the best for stroage. It is a natural bacteriacide. Water kept in a silver pitcher will not go rancid. You can have the same effect by placing silver coins in the water you are storing in other containers. This was discovered in the middle ages, thats why they used “silverware” for eating utensils.
Copper is also a natural bacteriacide. You can still purchase copper containers and use them for dry storage. You can also buy pure copper eating utensils. They are killers of bacteria similar to silver.
Rice has very high levels of arsenic. Brown rice is actually even higher. Wild rice, which is brown and not to be confused with unhusked brown rice has lower levels of arsenic.
Basmati rice has lower levels of arsenic. Rice should be preferably soaked over night, in order to allow the arsenic to leave the rice, and drained and rinsed 8 times. Much of the arsenic will leave the rice if soaked and rinsed 8 times. It is actually visible as a cloudy white pollutant in the water. The water will become visibly clearer with each rinse.
