    DC Quake

This article was written by Michael Snyder and originally published at his Economic Collapse blog.

Editor’s Comment: Society goes on living as if things are normal, and will be indefinitely. But science shows again and again that mother nature has some brutal events in mind that will little take into account the daily lives of the millions upon millions of residents in Southern California.

How long can the San Andreas fault accumulate pressure and built up stress without unleashing a terrifying and destructive megaquake? No one knows for sure, but there is certainly a lot to suggest that it could go at any time. If you are anywhere near that area, please be prepared, for many experts regard it as inevitable. The aftermath could be quite unstable and chaotic. It would be best to stay out of the path of destruction, which includes a major metropolitan area that could very quickly come unhinged.

Southern California Time Bomb: The Ground Surrounding The San Andreas Fault Is ‘Rising And Sinking’

    by Michael Snyder

If you reside on the west coast, you are living on borrowed time.  As you will see below, stress has been building up along the San Andreas fault for more than a century, and scientists tell us that southern California is way overdue for a major earthquake.  When that stress is finally released, the U.S. Geological Survey says that we could be looking at hundreds of billions of dollars in damage.  If you follow my work regularly, then you already know that there has been unusual shaking all along the “Ring of Fire” so far in 2016.  But thankfully the west coast of the United States has been spared from a major disaster up to this point.  Unfortunately, scientists assure us that it is only a matter of time before one strikes, and that is why it is so alarming that the ground surrounding the San Andreas fault has been “rising and sinking”.  The following comes from the Los Angeles Times

For the first time, scientists have produced a computer image showing huge sections of California rising and sinking around the San Andreas fault.

The vertical movement is the result of seismic strain that will be ultimately released in a large earthquake.

The California coastline is where two enormous tectonic plates come together.  The Pacific plate and the North American plate are slowly but surely moving against one another, and this creates a tremendous amount of geological stress.  While areas on both sides of the San Andreas fault have been steadily rising and sinking as a result of this stress, there are sections of the fault itself that have remained “locked” for more than 100 years, and other sections that have remained locked for more than 300 years

The region of the San Andreas fault between Monterey County and Imperial County hasn’t moved in a significant way in more than 150 years, and other parts of the fault have been accumulating stress for more than 300 years.

This build up of stress is extremely dangerous, because the more stress that builds up the worse the ultimate release of that stress could turn out to be.

If you look at this map from the U.S. Geological Survey, you can see all of the earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater that have hit California within the past seven days.  As you can see, there has been a whole lot of shaking going on…

California Earthquakes June 2015 - U.S. Geological Survey

And let us not forget that earlier this month a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck near San Diego, and it was followed by more than 800 aftershocks.

Unfortunately, none of these quakes has relieved the stress along the San Andreas fault.  While the San Andreas fault may be the most famous of the faults in southern California, the truth is that there are many others.  And just last year the U.S. Geological Survey admitted that the probability of a “megaquake” along the west coast involving multiple faults at once was significantly greater than they had previously been projecting

A recent report by the U.S. Geological Survey shows the inevitability of just such a quake, which is predicted to hit within the next couple of decades.

“The new likelihoods are due to the inclusion of possible multi-fault ruptures, where earthquakes are no longer confined to separate, individual faults, but can occasionally rupture multiple faults simultaneously,” lead author of the study and USGS scientist, Ned Field says. “This is a significant advancement in terms of representing a broader range of earthquakes throughout California’s complex fault system.”

But of course the San Andreas fault represents an absolutely massive threat to southern California all by itself.

Back in May, the Los Angeles Times quoted the director of the Southern California Earthquake Center as saying that the San Andreas fault is “locked, loaded and ready to roll”…

“The springs on the San Andreas system have been wound very, very tight. And the southern San Andreas fault, in particular, looks like it’s locked, loaded and ready to go,” Jordan said in the opening keynote talk.

Other sections of the San Andreas fault also are far overdue for a big quake. Further southeast of the Cajon Pass, such as in San Bernardino County, the fault has not moved substantially since an earthquake in 1812, and further southeast toward the Salton Sea, it has been relatively quiet since about 1680 to 1690.

Here’s the problem: Scientists have observed that based on the movement of tectonic plates, with the Pacific plate moving northwest of the North American plate, earthquakes should be relieving about 16 feet of accumulated plate movement every 100 years. Yet the San Andreas has not relieved stress that has been building up for more than a century.

A number of years ago, a study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey found that just a magnitude 7.8 earthquake along the southern San Andreas fault would cause more than 1,800 deaths, 50,000 injuries and 200 billion dollars in damage.

So what would a magnitude 8 or worse quake do?

And even though the U.S. Geological Survey does not believe that parts of California will eventually fall into the ocean, it is very open about the fact that Los Angeles and San Francisco will one day “be adjacent to one another” as the Pacific plate and the North American plate slowly slip past each other…

Will California eventually fall into the ocean?

No. The San Andreas Fault System, which crosses California from the Salton Sea in the south to Cape Mendocino in the north, is the boundary between the Pacific Plate and North American Plate. The Pacific Plate is moving northwest with respect to the North American Plate at approximately 46 millimeters per year (the rate your fingernails grow). The strike-slip earthquakes on the San Andreas Fault are a result of this plate motion. The plates are moving horizontally past one another, so California is not going to fall into the ocean. However, Los Angeles and San Francisco will one day be adjacent to one another!

Meanwhile, while we are talking about southern California, I just had to mention the record-breaking heatwave and the horrific wildfires that are plaguing the region this week.  In fact, two massive wildfires that have been raging out of control threaten to combine “into one super fire”

Two new fires raging in California could soon merge, creating one ‘super fire’, as wild blazes continue to consume thousands of acres and have already force massive evacuations.

Throughout the United States, firefighters are battling blazes of varying degrees in nine states, including California, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska, Montana, Washington, Utah, Wyoming and Colorado.

The most serious of these fires have been week-old blazes in California, New Mexico and Arizona, where scorching triple-digit temperatures have stoked the flames.

Normally we don’t see wildfires of this size and intensity until the late summer or early fall.

As I constantly remind my readers, last year was the worst year for wildfires in all of U.S. history, and so far this year we are more than a million acres ahead of the pace that was set last year.

We live at a time when our planet is becoming increasingly unstable.  Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, wildfires, historic droughts and unusual flooding events all seem to be on the rise globally.

So is there a reason why all of this is happening, or are we just going through a time when we are experiencing an astounding string of truly bizarre coincidences?

      1. NONSENSE……
“you can see all of the earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater that have hit California within the past seven days. As you can see, there has been a whole lot of shaking going on”
Yes, and that shaking is the result of hundreds of smaller earthquakes that relieve the pressure that builds up over time…it’s actually a Godsent to have lots of smaller quakes, therefore a large quake (6.5 or more) is very improbable. SC is more likely to descend into horror from a breakdown of the power grid by an EMP, or a financial collapse. There’s your real worry. Not mother nature.

        • WHO DID THE GOVERNMENT BUY THE EARTH FROM????????

THEN WHY DO WE PAY THE GOVERNMENT TO LIVE HERE???????

        • I’m calling the BIG ONE for May 24th, 2017 at 4:02pm PST. Mark your calendar. It will be bigger than anyone had previously thought possible.

          Much, much bigger. 🙁

      2. It would, of course, be a major catastrophe if San Andreas slipped now due to population density. I just don’t think people take nature very seriously. Whether it’s building on beaches prone to erosion or next to volcanoes, there is a lot of denial involved in peopl’s choices and investments. Complacency, normalcy bias… we’ve had our testings here with the floods recently. No doubt about it- people will rebuild in the same spot after being flooded 2 or 3 times in the same 14 month period. Better to cut your losses and move to higher ground, of which there is plenty around here. People whose shingle roofs go up in a flash during wildfires should never touch an asphalt roof ever again in their lives. Been driving in and out of the Metro area over the past week, and anyone who thinks they could get out of town if there was a dirty bomb set off or some kind of emp event or epidemic scare is completely insane.

        • 2isone, I’ve been through what’s called the LA Metro area in years past. Almost 13,000,000 people in that area alone. Only 5 major routes in and out of there. Those are people are definitely doomed.

          • There are 18 million people in Southern California who will be impacted by the BIG ONE. Northern California, and the SF Intl Airport in particular, will be in chaos.

            Ugly. 🙁

          • Braveheart- Yes. Years ago, people may have had a fighting chance to bug out by using back roads and such, but now everyone has access to GPS and even farm roads around here will be jammed. I used the brand new toll parkway around Houston this week… we are talking billions of dollars here… and it has one stinking lane coming off the flyover to the North, which is the chief avenue of evacuation for a hurricane. One wreck or blockage there would back up the parkway for miles.

      3. I live in Northern California. Other than an possible disruption in the power grid I see no problem that I am not prepared for. Between my generators, solar panels and propane assets I should fare well. No transport into N. California of foods and supplies?, check, water storage? check. Popcorn on hand? check.

If I lived in Hawaii, I would have a plan to evacuate to higher ground with some preps when the announcement is made that the BIG ONE has hit Kalifornia. You will probably have a few hours before it hits Pearl.

      6. Thinking outside of the box, as crazy as this sounds, something on this order might just save the world. Maybe something as tragic and massive as this would drawl US attention inward therefore stopping its global domination role for the Internationalist bankers and thereby preventing WWIII. The US public will certainly gravitate its mindset to America First out of necessity.

        • Unfortunately, I suspect the reaction of TPTB will be along the lines of “never let a good disaster go to waste”.

Last year, this site ran an article that said that California has been draining its aquifers at such a tremendous rate that it only had about a one-year supply left. That was a year ago. Whatever remains must be at a darn low level by now; especially as the multi-year drought shows no sign of letup.

When a mega-quake occurs, it will be the straw that broke the camel’s back. Between the water shortages and the huge, incessant fires, much of California is already teetering on crisis. Add an enormously destructive quake (or series of them) and we may well see a dramatic reduction in the massive supplies of food that California ships to the rest of the country.

At this point, I will not be surprised to see (at least regional) martial law; rationing; price controls; and other sweeping changes that increase –not decrease– the heavy hand of government.

It is also possible that the big agri-biz outfits could use their substantial lobbying power to wrangle bail-outs –at taxpayer expense, of course– similar to those given the finance industry. After all, the USA absolutely NEEDS General Foods, Nestle Corp., et al …or we would all starve… right?

The irony is that most supermarket products that this country consumes are making us obese and/or sick. I urge all of you to view the documentary “Fed Up” which is quite a revelation; it reveals how the food industry uses intensive scientific research to carefully craft food products that are addictive on a neurological level, and have devastating effects on metabolism and other biological processes.

Got to get one after the Tornado last night blow most of my guns away. No damage to the house but the trees took an major butt kicking.

      8. It has long been said that California sets the trends that eventually reach across America from sea to shining sea. Major earthquake destruction fits that pattern. Illegal immigrants is the most notable, the political and business types love the invaders. Mo money.

      9. Aljamo, how about rounding up all illegal aliens no matter where they come from and dump them in Cali? So when the “BIG ONE” finally hits…..

        • Awwwww geeze BH…it’s already hard enough just trying to survive here…there are many patriots here…personal circumstances and a desire to defend from here is the dynamic here…I may never escape…but I sure as hell am not going to give up and fold.

That’s where I am…7 miles from the beach. The state is experiencing a mass exodus…if if ever a wild West scenario was in the making its becoming a reality. • Don’t cut that walnut tree up for firewood. There are furniture makers that will pay up huge for a good piece of furniture quality wood as will companies that make wood stocks for rifles.

A mature walnut can fetch $500 to a $1000 per foot and they will haul it away.

          • Walnut is valuable. but nowhere near $500 to $1000 per board, square or running foot. In log form about $500 per thousand board feet and you need a truck load before they will come and get it. Find someone with a portable sawmill and let them saw it up into planks. Use them yourself or sell on craigslist.

            • That’s per foot of tree and that is the useful parts. There’s a lot of board feet of lumber in a 250 year old tree.

It wasn’t too many years ago and there was a rash of tree thefts in my state. People had 200 to 300 year old walnuts taken down in their front yard and hauled away while they were at work. They were astounded to find the missing tree was worth $80,000.

              • I actually wish the astounding prices you allege where true. The fact is one of the largest buyer,s of walnut logs is located 100 miles from where I live its located at willow springs mo. Ive sold them logs in the past. A board ft is 1 inch thick and a foot square. even a tree 2 feet in diameter after you take off the knerf (sawdust removed when sawing it) will only have at best 20 board feet per ft. At even a $1000 per1000 board ft. that’s only $20 per running foot on a 2 ft diameter log. a ten ft log might bring $200? provided its free of knots and other defects. The piano company at Truman ark closed. They used solid walnut. most walnut used is veneer or fake paneling or fake plastic stuff. Even gun stocks are not being made from walnut any more. The market is very weak at present. There isn’t any foreign market to speak of. and the domestic market is dismal. When you start talking out of your hat you better know what your doing. There are folks who actually have cut logged and sold timber who will call you out. I still have my log truck & loader, skid tractor and chain saws. I even own a small Bellsaw M 14 sawmill. Its very easy to verify what Im stating. Do a internet search on walnut log prices and log buyers.

                  • That’s sad. Good American hardwoods are beautiful.

To bad in a lousy economy these prices have dropped off. It may be better to saw it, seal the ends and store it to slow cure for a better price.

                    • 45 years ago I was selling oak logs to be sawn for rail road ties. I got $75 per thousand doyle scale for logs delivered to the sawmill. Paid a 1/3 for the timber. and I was making money. back then you could decide to do just about anything and if you worked at it you would make money. That all changed when they had the fake gas shortage in the 70,s. I had always heard big persimmon logs where very valuable. It was claimed they used persimmon to make golf clubs. I acquired a huge persimmion log. and tried to market it. There wasn’t any buyers. They quit using wood and went to composite clubs. I ended up cutting the tree into firewood. Reciently a neighbor had a big walnut tree that had died. I sawed it up into 1 inch boards and he built a small pole barn and used that walnut for siding. There was at one time a forieghn market for Paulowenia. Its a light wood that is used to make ornate boxes. folks started growing plantations of it. the market became saturated and today its almost worthless. Any road when you hear unbelievably high prices or things that sound too good to be true. Its usually a false hood at best.

      16. Sarge,,, give that walnut another life! Find a sawyer to cut that baby up into boards and save it,,,
If you have a nice burl let me know and ill buy it off you for knife handles, even a nice crotch gives excellent figure

      17. I was watching a documentary narrated by a scientist with an expertise in earthquakes. He said it isn’t possible for an EQ on the San Andreas faultline to cause a huge part of the state to break off and float away into the Pacific. He said the plates aren’t aligned so that could occur and that they also aren’t deep enough for that to occur.

He also said due to the positioning of the tectonic plates and also the depth of the plates, an EQ on the San Andreas fault would not be greater than an 8.0, if that,(which will still cause major devastation/destruction) but that it will not be much more than an 8.0 and will probably happen soon, most likely within the next few years.

He said this nonsense about a huge landmass splitting off and sailing away or forming an island creating beachfront property for bordering states is unfounded and untrue. Yes, major, major destruction, but not a huge landmass floating off into the ocean…will not happen that way.

Hopefully the earthquake will not occur while the power is off for the 2 week period they are threatening there in CA. Yes, the earthquake will most likely cause blackouts or grid down but an EQ with all that violent shaking in the dark would be a lot worse than one occurring in the light. Not having power during the actual earthquake is scary, especially if it happens during the night.

So water AND electricity shortages and now the threat of a major EQ…. what a mess. Glad I moved my family away a few years ago while the getting out was still good and we got full asking price on our (paid in full) home.

        • Julezee.

      19. So lets see in this day and age how things will work. Seems like the power system could go tits up for up to 21 days, then if mother nature lets out a real big silent fart an epic earth quake could really make a mess of a lot of real estate. The majority of people will become victims and rioting will occur.

Then in the hallowed hall of congress and from the oval office we will hear that all of the problems are due to people having guns and believing in Christ. Gun control will protect all these defenseless people. The great demons of the east will have sit in’s on the floor of the house, makin smoores and billboards to decry the weapon as the reason Kalifornication is suffering so. The islamic shithead will proclaim that more immigrants are needed to help put Kali back together and of course there will be investigations and arrest of anyone caught protecting themselves from the pavement apes, sand fleas or any other form of devolved human that have tried to steal, assault or attempt to kill the homeowner who OH My God prepared for a disaster. You poor individuals that live there will be blessed as Moonbeam flies over and proclaims a tragedy and then high tails it back to Scumento to work on new taxes and laws to take more of what you have left.

When help finally arrives it will be based on skin color and social status. Heck we all have seen the great help during hurricanes and tornadoes extended to the people who were victims. Point of this is, if it happens the only person you can count on is yourself to defend, protect, feed, and take care of your own. It’s never to late to start, but if you don’t start don’t come crying to me demanding that I forfeit what I have prepared to take care you it ain’t gonna happen.

      20. Stress is a killer and no I am not referring to earthquakes.

Being prepared for a power disruption, disruption to the water supply, monetary system disruptions, etc.,etc. should make you more relaxed and confident. It is counterproductive to endlessly concern yourself with every possible threat to you and your family.

Give yourself a break. Enjoy the beauty of nature. Stop focusing on anything and everything that can go wrong. I’m off to water my baby trees. They need attention until they are established, and the roots go deep into the ground. My chicks have been laying and I eat lots of eggs so my energy level is getting better.

Have a beautiful and peaceful day.☺️☺️☺️

      21. With Brown, Boxer, Fienstien and the idiots that vote for them earthquakes are the least of our problems. Copy that.

      22. It would be better if the grid was down if a large earthquake happened. Less danger from electrical fires and live wires ect. Nobody really know when or how big of a disaster any clatyclismic event will actually be. However we all know if one occurs where your at its YOYO. You are on your own.

        • Old Guy – Not while the earthquake is actually occurring. I’ve survived 3 major earthquakes (two during daylight & one during the black of night that immediately knocked out power for days) including Loma Prieta in Oct 1989.

If it happens after dark and you can’t see in front of you, to see falling debris, and so on, or where you need to duck/move for safety or to get to your supplies it only adds another layer of danger. Not too mention, major stress. For some people having the power on prior to and during could make the difference between life and death.

If you’ve never been through a major earthquake, as most people actually haven’t, it really is worse than you can imagine. It’s not only the violent shaking but the deafening noise is also terrifying. It’s really bad.

So afterwards, yes, maybe it is better in terms of electrical fires and live wires, although not having live weather & traffic reports & news updates, etc would add to the anxiety, stress and chaos. But being without during the actual quake or during the immediate time period after is risky as you need to be able to see live wires so you can avoid them and in order to see the injured so you can assist them, two of many other valid reasons.

I think if a quake hits while they’re already without power it’ll be a whole lot worse than if it hit during daylight and also when they have power. Plus they can turn on the TV and see what areas to avoid or if they need to evacuate, determine the evacuation route, etc.

An earthquake in the darkness is a million times worse than one in the light. Been there. Lived through three. Know the difference.

          • Well here is my logic there is a earthquake. The first thing you need to do is turnoff the breaker at your home. so something don’t sort out and burn it down. We are in the habit of when going to bed a head lamp on a elastic band and a handgun are on the bedside table. on both my wifes and my side. and we also have other battery powered lights. There used to be outside light,s on the power poles. I had them turned off. Why pay a monthly bill and taxes on something I don’t really need. And if all the electric is off prior to a earthquake you don’t need to be able to see live wires because there will not be any live wires. Turn on the TV to get info? simply get a scanner it runs on battery and switch to the emergency channel. Or a CB and check on channel 19 or ch9. You should be prepped for a quake and not rely or be dependent on the grid power.

          • What up julezee?….you want to pick fights and then run away…you’re on the wrong site!

        • Maybe that’s the plan.

      25. Watching the BREXIT VOTE LIVE

        • Gibraltar votes remain

        • There are many accusations of vote fraud. Other EU nationals without British citizenship are finding they were added to the rolls and mailed a ballot.

Polling places are handing out pencils to voters and indicating that pens and permanent markers are unacceptable. This one is a real head scratcher.

The Globalist Powers that shouldn’t be, look like they’ll win no matter how the people vote.

Even with the extension of voter registration., it may not have an effect

            • I believe BREXIT WILL SUCCEED…

      26. Government can also detonate devices to CAUSE such a quake–along with potentially others–to create their excuse for martial law (mass enslavement of the 99.99% or more for permanent and totalitarian labor for the .01% or fewer).

      27. Nigel Garage accuse gov of fraud

      28. Farage

      29. Good God! I don’t shop much since my wife is great about handling it. I had to go to a Costco store about 50 miles from where we live. If you weren’t already a prepper one stop there should make you one. Not all but a number of shelf ass types wandering around with flatbead sized carts. You quickly get the feeling if they were down to only one item of something you could get your arm bitten off for reaching.

      54. The pound from 1.50 to 1.40…C R A S H

        • The pound drops a little more and it’ll be a great buy.

          • Soros might think so as well…shades of the Napoleonic defeatdefeat and Rothschild deception

          • Prep….
The pound falling will be very short lived as I think was the globalist plan to short it immediately knowing it would bounce back very quickly…all for profits. The low was 1.33 and is already climbing as of this post is at 1.37. The trade was 1.50 before the Brexit. Another Rothschild/Soros scheme and as I mentioned before is what Mayer Rothschild did in the battle of Waterloo trade…but this is the 21st century version. You are absolutely correct on my poll question. Gold will indeed rise but will sett!e back to where it was before this vote. All this market reaction is just knee jerk and emotional to bait new money in…classic pump and dump on a fear trade.

      59. POLL QUESTION

        1 = YES
        2 = NO

        QUESTION:
Richard Haas CFR chairman has said that a “leave” vote will create a weaker UK and Europe.
        Do you agree?

        • No.

EU was on life support already. Now the UK at least can begin a recovery without being dragged down further.

I regularly watch BBC news and they absolutely hate America’s second amendment even more than they loath Donald Trump. They constantly campaign and propagandize against both. The BBC is a mouthpiece for the globalists and UK and EU socialists. This vote tells me the average UK commoner is just like the average American Trump supporter rejecting the New World order crowd.

This really is a good sign and a great day for the UK. Perhaps Brits on a roll should propose a second amendment because they really do have the right to defend their homes and families.

      60. I call for the ban of talon1776.

      61. Market futures are dropping so fast, market circuit breakers will likely be in place at the open of US markets.

A half hour later and gold is up $75 now.

      62. This is a huge defeat for Obama and his puppet masters.

        The popcorrn is great……..

OK on Gold make that +$80 now!

      63. Last post of the night, German bonds just went negative, and I’m going to bed.

        This is disastrously amazing.

The markets tomorrow will be out of control, expect a pause at the market open. ETF problems on overnight moves were never fixed, expect lots of blood in the street!

        Popcorn…. Check
Beer………. Check. Extra added to the fridge.

Good thing I’m out of the markets already. Ho Hum.

      64. Bizarre coincidences do occur on a rather regular basis, just not always connected as some might think. In 1992 Iowa had a wet fall, heavy snow through the winter, and heavy rains in the spring. We had monumental floods, and Iowa looked Like one big lake from satellite pictures, with a few “islands” of green. None of this could have been predicted accurately, excepting to say some day it would happen. Thing is, nobody had any idea it would come in that order, or that it would happen in the sequence it did, or the dates these natural processes would begin and end. The “little” earthquakes are not nearly strong enough to release the massive strain building in various plate junctures around the world, and there will be huge earthquakes from time to time, although nobody can accurately predict when or where. Given enough time and restrained movement, yes, they will happen. Those living in such areas have some choices I: get the hell out now, 2: reinforce your existing home against those 9.+ shocks, or 3: build a home mounts on rubber shocks or big springs, and make it of solid concrete all around 18″ thick walls with 2 mats of 1″ rebar in each wall, floor, and roof. Kinda spendy, but it’s the only thing I can envision that will withstand 9+ earthquakes. Maybe some of you structural engineers want to jump on this?

        • Donald:

Buildings in California are required to be built following strict guidelines. Large older buildings must be retrofitted (get upgrades to be made to withstand quakes).
That is why, although quakes happen here, we do not suffer the damages that often occur in South America and poorer third world areas.
California will not break off and fall into the Ocean. That is pure myth.

Wild fires occur naturally because of lightening. We put these out straight away. Mistake. These small fires keep the balance of nature in tact preventing mega fires. We have now had years of mega fires which now help in putting that balance back. Hopefully we will be better at preventing major fires.

It is a paradise right now. The weather is ideal, warm and sunny but not hot. Last night was breathtakingly beautiful. The sunset was incredible and although it was not terribly hot, it remained around seventy degrees until around eleven pm. Absolutely spectacular day!!!?
